What is Branding Photography and why it matters at LDP

Depending on who you ask, you can get a different definition of what a branding photoshoot is. No one is necessarily right or wrong, but I want to share and break down what it means to me and why it’s a cornerstone of Lily Davis Photographs.

Branding photography is a specialized niche of photography that focuses on visually representing a brand’s identity, values, and personality. Unlike standard photography, which might capture general moments or products, branding photography is tailored to communicate the uniqueness of a brand. It includes a mix of professional headshots, lifestyle images, product shots, and behind-the-scenes photos that collectively tell a cohesive story about a brand. The goal is to create a visual narrative that resonates with the target audience and enhances the brand’s overall image.

The most important piece of this entire process is that you find someone who truly understands your brand’s messaging AND can implement a strategic approach to your images.

There are different versions of Branding Photography – Personal Branding, Business Branding, Creative Headshots and Headshots. Now, a good branding shoot should include alllll of the above.

Strategic Photographic Approach

Regular Photography

Often focuses on capturing moments, scenes, or subjects in an aesthetically pleasing way. The goal might be to capture beauty, emotion, or action.

Branding Photography

Every shot is taken with a purpose. The images are created to communicate specific messages about the brand’s identity, values, and what makes it unique. It’s about creating a visual narrative that aligns with the brand’s marketing strategy.

Consistency and Cohesion

Regular Photography

Can be diverse and varied in style, tone, and subject matter.

Branding Photography

Consistency is key. The images must adhere to the brand’s visual guidelines, ensuring a cohesive look across all platforms. This consistency helps in reinforcing the brand’s identity and making it easily recognizable and helps to build trust.

Connection

Regular Photography

May not necessarily target a specific audience. The appeal is often broad and subjective and more in the moment.

Branding Photography

Tailored to resonate with the brand’s target audience. The images are crafted to evoke specific feelings, build connections, and inspire action among the intended viewers.

Storytelling

Regular Photography

Can tell stories, but often these stories are open to interpretation and are not necessarily tied to a larger narrative

Branding Photography

The storytelling is deliberate and strategic. Each image is a piece of a larger story that communicates the brand’s message, values, and vision.

Integration with Branding Elements

Regular Photography

Stands alone as a visual piece

Branding Photography

Often incorporates other branding elements such as logos, color schemes, and typography. These elements are subtly integrated to enhance brand recognition and ensure that the images align perfectly with other branded materials.

Branding photography is often utilized on all platforms, including but not limited to:

  • Website and Online Presence: Creating a visually appealing and cohesive online presence with images that reflect the brand’s personality.
  • Social Media: Crafting engaging and consistent content that resonates with the audience and strengthens brand identity.
  • Marketing and Advertising: Developing visuals that align with marketing campaigns and effectively communicate the brand’s message.
  • Product Photography: Showcasing products in a way that highlights their unique features and aligns with the brand’s overall aesthetic.

The biggest and most important piece of branding photography is that clients feel like their brand and business is fully understood.

Branding photography should, at minimum, include:

  • A consultation call
  • A Questionnaire
  • A Strategy Call
  • A Vision Board

A Branding photographer should be able to guide you on outfit, location that fits the overall theme of your session, and prop choices.

I have heard from multiple clients that they have previously used photographers who burned them with their branding photos. It is SO important that you find someone who specializes in Branding. Would you go to a wedding planner to plan a corporate event? Would you go to a children’s boutique to shop for a formal gown? Niches are so important and can determine the outcome of your images. We live in a day and age where, honestly, visuals are so important. Everything is so overused and over done in the stock photo world and people are craving a connection. Branding photography should create a visual connection with your ideal client.

Branding Photography is not one size fits all; it is so important to find someone who fits YOU.
